iGEM Competition

mSSB students are encouraged to participate to the international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, the first and biggest international student competition in the field of synthetic biology. The initiative was launched in 2004 by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and has taken place every year since. Students may prepare this annual competition at iSSB (Genopole®) over Summer, following their training period.

mSSB students led several iGEM-Evry teams

The iGEM Evry 2012 team received for the “French Froggies” project a Gold Medal, the Best Model and the Best Human Practices Awards (Europe) and Advanced to World Championship. The iGEM Evry 2013 team received for the “Iron Coli” project a Gold Medal, the Best Human Practices Award (Europe) and Advanced to World Championship. The team engineered in Escherichia coli an iron detecting and chelating device as a novel treatment for hemochromatosis and thalassemia. The iGEM Evry 2014 team received for the “Sponge Patrol” project a Bronze Medal at the World Championship. The team designed a bioremediation tool based on the filtration capacity of sponges with the aim to decrease the marine pollution and protect aquatic ecosystems. The iGEM Evry 2015 team received for the “YETI” project a Silver Medal at the World Championship. The team engineered in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae innovative and promising new biological systems for modulating the immune system and target tumor cells. The iGEM Evry 2016 team received for the “Let’s PLAy” project a Bronze Medal at the World Championship. The team aimed to produce in Pseudomonas putida the poly-lactic acid (PLA), a bioplastic ready to be used for biomedical applications, food packaging and 3D printing. The iGEM Evry Paris-Saclay 2017 team received for the Psicose project a Gold Medal at the World Championship. The team engineered Escherichia coli to produce and detect as a whose cell biosensor a rare sugar, D-Psicose. The iGEM Evry Paris-Saclay 2018 received for the “PEPTalk” project a Gold Medal at the World Championship and was nominated for Best New Composite Part prize, Overgrad. The team repurposed the small peptide based signalling system of SPbeta group bacteriophages of Bacillus subtilis for application in Escherichia coli. The iGEM Evry Paris-Saclay 2019 received for the “Fat and Fabulous” project a Gold Medal at the World Championship and was nominated for Best Measurement prize, Overgrad. The team developed a launchpad for bioproduction of medically-relevant Conjugated Linolenic Acids (CLnAs), which is a class of rare fatty acids with three conjugated bonds using the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, a powerful chassis organism, whose metabolism is naturally poised for lipid production. The iGEM Evry Paris-Saclay 2020 received for the “Rosewood” project a Gold Medal at the World Championship and was nominated for 4 awards: Best New Application Project, Best New Composite Part, Best Part Collection and Best Measurement, Overgrad. The team was interested in Rosewood species that are the most trafficked wildlife products and developed a collection of biosensors based on toehold switches that will accelerate the identification process and thus empower local authorities to identify loggings species and origins in situ. The iGEM Evry Paris-Saclay 2021 received for the “Evolution.T7” project a Gold Medal at the World Championship and was nominated for the Best Wiki Award, Overgrad. The team maximized the effectiveness of tools based on the orthogonal RNA polymerases of phase T7 for in vivo directed evolution of proteins and validated the performance of the system by evolving enzymes, fluorescent proteins, and transcription factors. The iGEM Evry Paris-Saclay 2022 received for the “Electricia coli” project a Gold Medal at the World Championship and was nominated for the Best Measurement Award, Overgrad. The team developed an innovative diagnostic tool for early-stage detection of cancer by taking advantage of biomarker sensing together with external electron transfer through a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The final output, an electrical signal, was detected with an MFC hardware device designed, built by 3D printing, and connected to a computer through an IOT Arduino hardware. The iGEM Evry Paris-Saclay 2023 received for the “OptogenEYEsis” project a Gold Medal at the World Championship, was award the Best Hardware Prize, Overgrad, and was nominated for the Best Software Tool, Overgrad. The iGEM Evry Paris-Saclay 2024 received for the “PHAGEVO” project a Gold Medal at the World Championship, was among the best TOP 10 teams, Overgrad, and was nominated for the Best Foundational Advance Project Award, Undergrad & Overgrad. The team introduced a novel tool that combines Phage-Assisted Non-Continuous Evolution (PANCE) and the Evolution.T7 system, providing a powerful method for in vivo protein evolution. The  project also leverages the power of artificial intelligence to engineer XylS for PA and TPA sensitivity owing to FLINT, a model developed by our team based on PocketGen.
